Retro SMS – puzzle for 25 October 2026

Retro SMS is a nostalgic speed game: type the day's message as fast as you can on an old-school phone keypad.

Each key holds several letters (2 is a, b, c), so you press a key as many times as the letter's position on it.

How to play

1. Read the target SMS at the top of the screen.
2. Press the right number key once, twice or more to pick the letter you need.
3. For two letters on the same key in a row, pause for a moment until the first letter locks in.
4. Your time goes on the leaderboard so you can compare yourself with other players.

Tips

• Learn the layout: 2 abc, 3 def, 4 ghi, 5 jkl, 6 mno, 7 pqrs, 8 tuv, 9 wxyz.
• The 0 key types a space.
• Accuracy matters as much as speed: fixing a typo costs time.

Strategy

• Read the whole message before you start. The clock only starts on your first key press, so take a moment to spot where two letters on the same key come back to back.
• Waiting is the biggest time sink: if you stop pressing, a letter locks in by itself after a short pause of under a second. If the next letter is on a different key, carry on immediately; you only need to wait for pairs on the same key.
• Each key cycles through its letters, then its digit, then starts again. Overshooting means going all the way around, so count your presses instead of hammering the key.
• If the text on the display turns red, you have drifted from the message. Fix it straight away with the C key, because every letter typed after the slip would need deleting too.

A worked example

Take HELLO as practice. H is the second letter on 4, so two presses. E is the second letter on 3, two presses. L is the third letter on 5, three presses. Now comes the catch: the next L is on the same key, so you must wait for the first L to lock in before pressing 5 three more times. O finishes it with three presses on 6.

Compare that with a word like GOT: G is one press on 4, O three presses on 6 and T one press on 8. Every letter is on a different key, so there is no waiting at all and the word flies by. Spotting these same-key pairs in advance is where most of the time is won or lost.

History of the game

The first SMS was sent in December 1992 in the UK, from a computer to a mobile phone, and it was a simple Christmas greeting. A message was capped at 160 characters, which pushed a whole generation to invent its own abbreviations.

On keypad phones the letters shared the number keys, typed in the same multi-tap (ABC) mode this game uses. T9 predictive text later let you type a word with one press per letter, but plenty of people stuck with multi-tap and could type it remarkably fast without looking.
